Apple has more cash on hand than U.S. government
Apple has more cash on hand than U.S. government
Apple has more cash on hand than U.S. government I don’t know if this is more of a statement on how ridiculously rich Apple has become, or the harsh state of the American economy, but if the math adds up, the U.S. government has an operating balance of $73.768 billion, while the maker of iPhone and various other silky-smooth gadgets has $75.876 billion in the bank according to the last quarterly results. Of course, the economies of international corporations and entire nations vary significantly, making a direct comparison a bit unfair, but it does put things into perspective. As far as worldwide market cap goes, Apple is the second-biggest company in the world, after oil behemoth Exxon Mobil.
The fact that tons of people are willing to buy iPhone products before even knowing what they are just goes to show how much of a mindshare Apple has captured (at very least in the U.S.). It’s really pretty boggling, especially if you aren’t a part of the iCult, but you can’t argue with the amount of success the company has enjoyed. I guess the next step now is for Apple to buy the entire state of California from the U.S. government and make a magical utopian society comprised of self-sufficient space donuts.

Top 5 Sprint Smartphones

Top 5 Sprint Smartphones
Top 5 Sprint Smartphones
Top 5 Sprint Smartphones Sprint is one of my favorite wireless carriers in the U.S., and it has an excellent selection of smartphones. It all started with the HTC Evo 4G, which was the first 4G WiMax device for Sprint. It was also a beast of a phone with a four-plus-inch screen and a 1GHz processor running Google’s Android platform. After that, Sprint had a series of hits with the Samsung Epic 4G and EVO Shift 4G.
The great thing about Sprint is its bundled Simply Everything plans: you simply choose your minutes packages and the data and messaging are included and totally unlimited. The best thing about the plans is that they include unlimited calling to mobile phones on any U.S. carrier, which means your minutes really only count when you’re calling landlines.
In the market for a new smartphone with Sprint? Check out the top 5 smartphones, in no particular order, for Sprint below.

1. HTC EVO 3D

evo4 720x380 e1311801003417 Top 5 Sprint SmartphonesThe HTC EVO 3D is an excellent successor to the original Evo 4G. The biggest difference between the two, which ought to be obvious in the name, is that the latest version offers 3D video and still image recording, along with glasses-free 3D viewing on its display. It has a 4.3-inch qHD display (quarter HD) and supports Sprint’s 4G WiMax network, which is plenty fast. It also packs a more powerful processor compared to its predecessor – a 1.2GHz dual-core unit, which ought to make sure the thing runs smoothly.
There are a few downsides, however, and the first that comes to mind is battery life. Even though the HTC EVO 3D packs a 1730mAh battery, total use was limited to just a few hours. You’ll have to exercise careful power management and not get too crazy with power-hungry apps, but that’s pretty standard practice for most high-end Android devices these days.
The HTC EVO 3D will set you back $199.99 with a new, two-year contract.

2. HTC Arrive

htc arrive Top 5 Sprint SmartphonesThe HTC Arrive is the Windows Phone 7 smartphone of choice if you’re looking at Sprint. It was the first CDMA Windows Phone device, a platform that has shown a lot of early promise and more to come in an update slated for this fall. The device has a 5MP camera, 1GHz processor, 3.6-inch WVGA display (800 x 480) and a 1500mAh battery.
The nice thing about the HTC Arrive is that it also has a slide-out QWERTY keyboard for those who prefer tactility when messaging or e-mailing. The keyboard is spacious and has a dedicated number row, and it offers good feedback when you’re typing.
Call quality on the HTC Arrive is pretty good over Sprint’s network, and battery life is equally admirable. Sadly, the HTC Arrive does not support Sprint’s 4G WiMax network, but if you’re willing to make that sacrifice, this Windows Phone handset is a good choice. It runs for $199.99 on a new, two-year contract.

3. HTC EVO Shift 4G

evo shift 4g Top 5 Sprint SmartphonesThe HTC EVO Shift 4G might not be the most powerful Android handset on the market, but for the budget conscious, it’s an excellent device. It supports WiMax for fast data speeds, hence the 4G moniker in its name, and runs Android 2.2 so you’ll have access to Adobe Flash in your web browser and all the apps in the Android Market.
The HTC EVO Shift 4G has a 3.6-inch WVGA display, Android 2.2 (including mobile hotspot capabilities over Sprint’s WiMAX network), 800 MHz processor with 512 MB of RAM, Wi-Fi b/g/n, a 5 megapixel camera with autofocus, flash, and 720p video recording, plus the usual, like Wi-Fi, 3G, and GPS. While it’s not the most topped out smartphone in terms of straight specs, it’s still very admirable. You can grab the EVO Shift 4G for $99 with a two-year contract.

4. Motorola Photon 4G

photon 4g e1311801250425 Top 5 Sprint SmartphonesIf you’re looking for the cream of the crop, and maybe 3D capabilities are too much of a gimmick for you, look no further than the Motorola Photon 4G. This beast of a phone has just about everything you could want in a modern-day Android device: 4.3-inch qHD display, 8MP rear camera and VGA front-facing camera, 16GB of pre-installed memory that’s expandable to 32GB, kickstand, WiMAX, WiFi, Bluetooth, and GPS, with Android 2.3 Gingerbread and NVIDIA’s powerful dual-core Tegra 2 processor. Could you possibly want or need anything else?
The Motorola Photon 4G becomes available July 31 for $199 with a two-year contract.

5. Google Nexus S 4G

google samsung nexus s hands on review 181 660x495 e1311801355173 Top 5 Sprint SmartphonesIt’s the successor to the original Nexus One, and it doesn’t really disappoint. The Nexus S 4G, a Google phone in the truest sense, runs the latest version of Android, which is 2.3 Gingerbread, and even supports a technology that no one really uses all that much – NFC! How futuristic! It’s built for Google by Samsung, and so it has a 4-inch Super AMOLED display at 800 x 480 resolution, and a 1GHz Hummingbird processor. Being a 4G phone, it supports Sprint’s WiMax network, so you’ll get fast data speeds where you’re covered.
It’s a vanilla Android phone, which means there is no custom user interface and will likely be first in line for updates to the Android operating system. And for all that you’re getting, $99 on a two-year contract isn’t all that bad, either.
There you have it. There was a time when high-end smartphone options were very limited for Sprint users, but these days there is plenty to choose from. Best of all, its network is rarely congested, its plans are excellent and its 4G WiMax network is pretty good. It’s almost a win-win situation for everyone.

Top 5 smartphones on T-Mobile

Top 5 smartphones on T-Mobile
Top 5 smartphones on T-Mobile
Top 5 smartphones on T-Mobile Even with the impending AT&T acquisition of T-Mobile, the fourth largest US carrier still isn’t lacking when it comes to great smartphones. T-Mobile’s latest handsets can easily go toe-to-toe with most handsets available in the United States and we’re going to lay out the top five smartphones available for the carrier.

Sensation 4G

HTC Sensation 1 Top 5 smartphones on T Mobile
Top 5 smartphones on T-Mobile Not only is the Sensation 4G a sexy phone, it’s one of the most powerful handsets we’ve seen to date. While essentially an EVO 3D without the gimmicky 3D part, the Sensation 4G comes with a more svelte design that screams HTC. The manufacturer has a knack for design and that is apparent with just a glance of this handset.
Top 5 smartphones on T-Mobile The handset ships with a blazing fast 1.2GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, a gorgeous 4.3 inch qHD display, 8 megapixel camera, Android 2.3 Gingerbread with HTC Sense 3.0, and more, making it a top-notch competitor to virtually any handset out on the market today.
Hell, if you’re a do-it-yourself kind of person, you can even bling out that Sensation’s back piece and give a brand new, chrome look.

myTouch 4G Slide

t mobile mytouch 4g slide 11 Top 5 smartphones on T Mobile
The myTouch 4G Slide is a solid successor to the original myTouch Slide and offers up a best in class camera, snappy dual-core processor, and a nice full QWERTY keyboard hiding underneath the 3.7 inch display.
If you like the Sensation 4G but absolutely need a keyboard on your phone, then look no further than the 4G Slide. While we favor the original’s keyboard just a wee bit better, T-Mobile’s latest myTouch slider is more than usable and offers a stupid amount of power that should easily be enough for even the power users out there.
While we love that the myTouch 4G Slide packs a nice QWERTY keyboard, it’s the camera that will really blow you away. Even besting the iPhone 4′s great camera, the myTouch Slide comes with software that gives the look and feel of a regular point and shoot, offering many options for the right setting.

T-Mobile G2X

g2x e Top 5 smartphones on T Mobile
The T-Mobile G2X is currently the only Android phone that ships with both NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 dual-core processor and stock Android, which is usually something that makes the geeks swoon. That said, this handset is definitely a please-all device with enough power under the hood to easily last you that two-year contract you signed up for to get it.
The G2X comes with a 1GHz NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual-core processor, 4 inch IPS display, HSPA+ support, HDMI port, and 8 megapixel camera, the G2X is one of our favorite handsets to date.
The T-Mobile G2X is a simple, yet insanely powerful device that should finally be available at T-Mobile stores again after being MIA for so long.

Sidekick 4G

Sidekick 4G Top 5 smartphones on T Mobile
We were a bit skeptical when we first heard that an Android-powered Sidekick would be making an appearance this year, and got a bit queasy when we heard it would be coming from Samsung. Luckily, the Samsung-made, Android-powered Sidekick 4G is a great device that retains a lot of what we loved about the Sidekick line and adds in more features than you can shake a stick at.
Even though the software is definitely Android, you can tell that T-Mobile and Samsung worked hard at giving the handset the look and feel of the original Sidekicks, and it paid off.  Shipping with a 3.5 inch display, very capable QWERTY keyboard, HSPA+ support, and Android, the Sidekick 4G is the revamp we’ve been waiting for without leaving out the features of the previous line.

Galaxy S 4G

samsung galaxy s 4g 550px Top 5 smartphones on T Mobile
While it’s basically a Samsung Vibrant with HSPA+ support, the Galaxy S 4G was the first handset released by T-Mobile that could reach theoretical speeds of 21Mbps and that alone would be worth grabbing over the original Vibrant. That said, you’d have trouble grabbing data speeds anywhere near 21Mbps down, as even in the best parts of San Francisco, I’ve yet to see any handset hit 9Mbps down yet.
Either way, the Galaxy S 4G brings features like the front-facing camera that was absent from the Vibrant but present in the original Galaxy S, and silver backing to distinguish it from the hordes of Galaxy S phones in the world today. Other specs include the 4 inch Super AMOLED display, 1GHz Hummingbird processor, and 5 megapixel camera, making this a solid, well-rounded handset, even if it pales in comparison to most of the handsets above.
If you’re seriously looking into this handset, we’d say wait it out for just a month, as something better may be on the way.

T-Mobile G2 Gingerbread updates rolling out as we speak

T-Mobile G2 Gingerbread updates rolling out as we speak
T-Mobile G2 Gingerbread updates rolling out as we speak
T-Mobile G2 Gingerbread updates rolling out as we speak After G2X, T-Mobile has started rolling out Android 2.3 Gingerbread updates for another device – T-Mobile G2. The OTA (over-the-air) update will last for few weeks so don’t panic if you don’t get it today or tomorrow – it will eventually reach everyone. As a matter of fact, T-Mobile underlines you shouldn’t call them before September 1st about the update, because the timeline for receiving the OTA update cannot be expedited and they can’t manually push the software to customers who ask to receive it.
The new version of the software brings several improvements to the original software, including Wi-Fi calling (SIP-based VoIP), new SMS and email notification, and improvements to sending MMS from the Gallery. There are also new features included with the Gingerbread (better Copy/Paste), as well as T-Mobile G2 specific updates like:
  • Tell HTC app
  • Google Books added
  • Notification bar color scheme is changed to black
  • New battery indicator, phone and web icons
  • Color-coded network icon and signal indicator added: green when connected to Google servers, grey when not connected.
  • Pressing the power key while on a call disables the proximity sensor
To check out whether there’s new software available for your T-Mobile G2, go to “Settings,” “About Phone” and then “System updates.”
